Easter
Easter can only be described as the highest point of remembrance within the Christian year; there is a celebration of the central mystery of Christ, his triumph over death and the cross in His resurrection. It is often said that it is important to look at the past, if only to secure us in the present and give us spiritual strength for the future. Easter is such a time.
The Easter season begins this year on Ash Wednesday the 17th of February, a day of fast and abstinence. The remains of burnt palm branches, blessed and used to mark the foreheads of the faithful are a reminder of mortality and as a penitential sign of turning away from sin. A symbolic and sincere act that has been carried out for centuries begins a forty-day liturgical season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving in meditation of our Lord’s forty days in the desert. Make this a time to personally ‘get to know’ what Christ was all about, visit your local church and explore the journey of Easter through the days and beyond.
